Occupational health and safety
The health and safety of Okomu Oil Palm Company’s workers are always the top priority.
Okomu’s Occupational Health and Safety management system (OHS) is based on the ISO 45001 and RSPO standards.
Okomu has developed its health and safety policy in compliance with certification criteria. This comprises specific commitments, not only related to accident and injury prevention, but also to continuous improvement of occupational health and safety management and performance. One of the specific actions is a competent Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) committee that advises management and makes recommendations on accident and occupational illness prevention. The team also organizes regular training sessions, advocacy training, sensitization programs, and campaigns on common health issues, personal/environmental hygiene awareness, health enlightenment campaigns on environmental health, e.g., Coronavirus, Ebola, Lassa Fever, etc.
Supervision and regular medical check-ups enable us to inform our employees of any potential job-related medical risks.
The HSE committee also develops specific programs for identified health issues:
- Malaria: distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, signs, campaigns/awareness, and treatment.
- HIV: distribution of condoms, regular testing, signs, treatment and counselling, hygiene awareness/campaigns.
- Coronavirus: distribution of nose masks, washing of hands, temperature check, provision of hand sanitizer, daily fumigation of fomites, and periodic awareness programs.
